Royal Exchange Insurance Fire Office Policy Registers
(Guildhall Ms. No. 7253)

These insurance policies cover the years 1774-1786 and were abstracted from the original sources by Norman Hidden. They are in addition to the 170 policies with the Sun Fire Insurance Office.

There are details of 57 insurance policies over these 13 years. The data includes policy holders' names, tenants names, many property names (especially of inns) and interesting details of the properties - sizes, contents, roofing and building materials. For some years there are no records at all. Perhaps the local agent failed to gather the necessary documentation and payment. For others, especially after 1782, there are as many as 12 policies in a year. These records add greatly to our knowledge of life in 18th century Hungerford.
