Sun Insurance Fire Office Policy Registers
(Guildhall Ms. No. 11936)

Fire insurance in areas outside London did not begin until early in the 18th century. The Sun Insurance Fire Office commenced its business in the provinces in 1712.

These insurance policies cover the years 1716-1784 and were abstracted from the original sources by Norman Hidden. There are details of 170 insurance policies over these 69 years. The data includes policy holders' names, tenants names, many property names (especially of inns) and interesting details of the properties - sizes, contents, roofing and building materials. For some years there are no records at all. Perhaps the local agent failed to gather the necessary documentation and payment. For others, especially after 1778, there are as many as 17 policies in a year. These records add greatly to our knowledge of life in 18th century Hungerford.
