317515 Sgt Henderson J.

John Henderson was a Regular soldier based at Tidworth. His home town is not known.

He must have been a frequent visitor to Hungerford as it was here that he met Myrtle Jessett, whose father at one time ran the Royal Exchange (now the Down Gate). He was serving with the 9th Queens Royal Lancers when he and Myrtle got married on 6 August 1938.

Between 1938 and 1942 his career in the army took him to 110th Regiment Royal Armoured Corp and the Border Regiment. Whilst studying for a commission and following a short illness, he died age 29 on 15 May 1942. The Parish Magazine reported that he was a soldier of great promise and ability.

He is buried in St Saviours Cemetery Eddington where his grave is marked by a stone with the Regimental Badge.
