John Henderson was born in 1913, the son of James and Haydi Henderson. He became a regular soldier - a sergeant in the Royal Armoured Corps based at Tidworth. His home town is not known.

He must have been a frequent visitor to Hungerford as it was here that he met Myrtle Una Jessett, whose father at one time ran the Royal Exchange (now the Down Gate). He was serving with the 9th Queens Royal Lancers when he and Myrtle got married in Newbury on 6th August 1938. John and Myrtle had two sons, Brian J, born in 1939 and Derek T, born in 1940. Both sons were born in the Newbury Registration district.

Between 1938 and 1942 his career in the army took him to 110th Regiment Royal Armoured Corp and the Border Regiment. Whilst studying for a commission and following a short illness, he died aged 29 on 15th May 1942. The Parish Magazine reported that he was a soldier of great promise and ability. At the time of his death, his home address was given as 15 Down View, Hungerford.

He is buried in St Saviours Cemetery Eddington where his grave is marked by a CWGC headstone with the Regimental Badge.
