You are in [Events] [Second World War] [Spanish refugee Children, 1937]

The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936. During the conflict about 35,000 children were evacuated, of whom about 20,000 were from the Basque region. About 4,000 came the the United Kingdom.

In Berkshire there were 100 children and five women, and much help was given by the people of Hungerford. Some families stayed long term in Hungerford.

Two letters dated Jun-Jul 1937 written to the Constable, Mr E Munford, convey a little of the problems of these Spanish Refugee Children.
